Treating hemorrhoids in pregnancy

Question posted 06.06.12 // In All Questions, Pregnancy & Birth

Question:

Hi I am 16 weeks pregnant and I have really bad hemorrhoids. Can I use an OTC remedy or is it better for me to check with my doctor first? My Chinese isn't good enough to find out from the pharmacist if it is safe for me to use or not. Thanks!

Answer:

Unfortunately hemorrhoids are not an uncommon experience in pregnancy. You can certainly try over-the-counter medications first. Tucks (or a similar type of product) are a good option because they have pain relief and anti-itch medication. Otherwise you can make your own with over-the-counter products.

- Witch hazel is a natural ingredient that be cooling

- Mineral oil is lubricating and a protectant for irritation

- Lidocaine jelly or Pramoxine is a topical anesthetic

- Hydrocortisone will help with the itchiness and inflammation. This comes in a cream and a suppository.

Remember to do your best to avoid constipation and try not to strain; your stool should be soft. Drink plenty of water, eat fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Maybe even try prune juice. Colace and senna are good gentle laxatives if needed.

If you have a hard time finding these products or the hemorrhoids are extremely painful and not relieved with other treatments it is always best to see your doctor.
