Vitamin D for newborns
Question:
I just came back from the doctor and he told me that my 4 month old is calcium deficient and that I need to increase his vitamin D intake and recommended some drops. I am breastfeeding 100% so don't quite understand what is going on?
Answer:
In order to balance calcium levels and prevent rickets, exclusively breastfed infants should receive Vitamin D supplementation, usually about 400 Units/day (in the form of infant drops) since breast milk does not contain enough and it is difficult for infants to obtain the required amount of sunlight needed to maintain good Vitamin D levels.
