What are the symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease?

Question:

What are the symptoms of HFMD? My son's class was recently close because of HFMD (3 kids in his class had it) and my son just had a high fever but no other symptoms (no blisters on his mouth or hands or feet) and when I was getting ready to take him to the doctor his fever actually stopped, so I didn't go. It was more like a one day thing. Then my other son had the same thing, one day fever, very high and then nothing else. Shall I bring them still in for an evaluation?

Answer:

HFMD is caused by viruses. The illness can begin with fever then evolve to include ulcers in the mouth and lesions on the hands, feet, and even the buttocks. Not all children will have all of these symptoms. The treatment is supportive with fever/pain medications and increasing fluids since dehydration is a concern. Children should see the doctor if symptoms worsen. Avoiding other children and good hygiene helps to prevent HFMD from spreading.
